Last week was the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels. In English parlance this holiday is known as "Michaelmas." This is on September 29th and because of this is also the the name of the first term at Oxford. Michaelmas reminds of something very important, and the fact that this day is marked on the Church Calendar illustrates no mere mystery cult. We as Christian believe in "visibilium omnium et invisibilium," as the creed says. We believe that reality comprises both seen and unseen, a reality with humans and other beings that are "super" natural. Our world is crowded with angels and demons, cherubim and seraphim hurrying without haste to do the Lord's bidding. Shakespeare says, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." That philosophy for us is materialism, and it is the zeitgeist and poison of the age. Michaelmas is one small way to counter that, a small dose of an antidote.
